First day back at the desk, 2007
PhDs are horrible, nasty, self-indulgent-and-therefore-ultimately-self-torturing, leaden bricks of pain which you build to make the walls of The Institution ever stronger and strongest around you because when it’s all over that is the only place you’ll be able to move and anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool. A FOOL! Believe nothing about the beauty and wonder of the intellectual enterprise! It’s all just intricately laced-up words extracted from the global cesspool in order to create our own lymph-ridden insulated place in it! Nor the delights of self-managed time! I might be able to get up at 9am but is this to assume I have had any sleep? NO IT IS NOT! I have been twisting and turning in the yawning holes in my argument, yearning for relief from THE ENDLESS NEUROJOURNEY I AM TAKING MY BODY ON.*
*Normal programming shall resume as soon as OUR BROADCASTER HAS STOPPED RIPPING THE HAIR FROM OUT OF HER HEAD.
Beam me back to nobless oblige, to borrow a turn of phrase.
Ann, are you due for an epiphany?

Yeah, I love my PhD but I must admit I can pretty clearly see a negative impact on my life over the last six months brought about, at least in part, by brutal death study. I’m on intermission but at some point I have to make a return to it. It’s almost finished, but with a 85,000 word draft even the most minor operations are daunting.

Frasco: Yes please.
Ianto: Shhh.

PhDs are one of the wierdest torture trials known. But believe me one day it will just be done. Inevitably, if you perservere, it will be done. Maybe done not as great as you would have liked, maybe with holes you can see (but noone else can shh… be quiet), but you will have learned something. That is that it is extremely hard work to even advance a little bit. That you need to be satisfied with something less than addressing the whole gdam topic. Its too much. Wait till you have 4 PhD students of your own to direct(if that happens), then you can finally get some answers! And then it will be 4 years later and its strange that that big thing is now done so long ago. Cheers Brian

Oh, thanks so much dude, that is exactly what I needed to hear this morning (hot, desolate day at uni … everyone else on holiday … brain struggling to engage ….)
Hope all is rockin’ in brianworld.
